White to move and mate in two #431 - Mars Solar Conjunction [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-14 A Mars Solar Conjunction occurs when Mars moves behind the Sun as seen from Earth. This occurs approx. every 2 years. For about 2 weeks around these episodes, communications from earth with rovers and orbiters at Mars are paused, as ionized gas around the sun plays havoc with comm. signals. The current blackout period started on Nov 11 and will continue until Nov 25. Some low rate status updates will be received during this period except when Mars is behind the Sun. Mars rovers Perseverance and Curiosity will stay put but continue to collect science data, which will be downloaded after Nov 25. Perseverance at its parking spot for the next 2 weeks mars.nasa.gov/... Let’s keep persevering with these chess puzzles through this period. Today’s puzzle was composed by noted Argentinian chess composer Arnoldo Ellerman (1893 - 1969) in 1918. There might even be chess piece conjunctions in the solution! P.S. The chess puzzle is published on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. ET. It is customary for advanced players to wait till midnight ET before posting the full solution. Before then, they provide some stats about the solution (e.g., the minimum number of distinct checkmate moves), help guide others, and sometimes post hints. But there are no hard-and-fast rules; feel free to post comments as you please.
