[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-14 As dramatic as the headline is, I am afraid our democracy is under a real attack internally. There has been an ongoing effort to restrict who can vote, making it more difficult for voters who typically align with the Democratic Party to vote. States administer the election process under the oversight of the Federal government. They have made many changes to their voting procedures over time. Many of these changes are in response to new technology that allows for a more efficient and voter-friendly process. These changes include initiatives such as online registration and automatic registration coordinated with the states’ DMVs. But in recent years, especially since the 2020 election, Republican-controlled states have been making changes to restrict who can vote. Aggressively purging voting rolls, disallowing drop boxes, cutting the number of polling places, and requiring voters present a government issued photo ID at the polls are just some of the common changes that states have made. These changes also include some ridiculous new rules such as you cannot give water to people waiting in line to vote. Really, Georgia? A colleague and I wrote a paper looking at how these policy change are affecting voting turnout. We find some comfort in the findings that the changes only have a small effect on voter turnout. But we remain very concerned as many states have made multiple restrictive changes and in this tight election SMALL CHANGES WILL LIKELY MATTER.
