Poll: Andy Kim leads Tammy Murphy by 19 points in U.S. Senate race [1] ['David Wildstein'] Date: 2023-11-15 13:00:28+00:00 Rep. Andy Kim holds a 19-point lead over First Lady Tammy Murphy in New Jersey’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary, according to an internal poll of likely voters conducted by Public Policy Polling on behalf of the Kim campaign. Kim leads Murphy, 40%-21%, with indicted incumbent Bob Menendez running third with just 5% of the Democratic vote. More than one-third of the Democrats polled (34%) are undecided. Murphy, the wife of Gov. Phil Murphy, entered the Senate race earlier this morning. Nearly eight weeks after his indictment on federal corruption charges, Menendez has an upside-down favorables of 10%-68% among New Jersey Democrats, one of the lowest ever recorded for a statewide officeholder. “New Jersey voters know what’s at stake in this election, and we need someone who is proven, experienced and battle-tested to make sure this seat doesn’t give the majority back to Mitch McConnell and Washington Republicans,” Kim said. Kim, a three-term congressman from Burlington County, and Murphy, a first-time candidate, remain unknown to many voters statewide. Among Democrats, Kim has favorables of 45%-5%; Murphy is at 50%-9%. Governor Murphy remains popular among Democrats, with favorables at 76%-9%. President Joe Biden is at 71%-19% among members of his own party in New Jersey. Kim announced his Senate bid on September 23, one day after the Justice Department unsealed an indictment alleging that Menendez had accepted bribes and had passed sensitive but unclassified documents to Egyptian officials. Later, the three-term U.S. Senator was charged with illegally serving as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. “The momentum I’ve seen from day one has been overwhelming. We raised nearly a million dollars in our first week, we’ve had incredible support from the grassroots throughout New Jersey, and people are fired up to restore integrity and bring change to our broken politics,” Kim said. “I continue to be humbled by the support I’ve seen on the ground, and through this poll and others like it. I’ll keep working hard to earn the support of every voter across New Jersey.” Kim, who worked for the State Department in Afghanistan and then in the Obama White House as a National Security Council staffer, formally launched his campaign on Friday evening, and released his first campaign video on Tuesday. Menendez has not said if he will seek re-election next year. Another candidate, former Newark school board member Lawrence Hamm, was not included in the poll. The Public Policy Polling survey was conducted on November 13-14 and has a sample size of 580 likely Democratic primary voters.
