It's Time For Car Speed Limiting Technology [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-18 Carmakers, and GPS have advanced far enough to install speed limiters on car so they can at most go a few miles over. It would save a lot of lives, maybe reduce emissions, and take away the fun people get out of driving. It’s called Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) might be close to requiring manufacturers to install it on new cars. One type of ISA makes a nasty noise when exceeding limits, another just shuts things down. E-bikes already have an all round limiter of 20mph for type 2, and I think rentals are at 15mph. I’d be way happy if they included a feature to make a loud obnoxious noise for tailgating or even following too close. The downside is that people love to drive and they love to tromp on the gas pedal. Driving for many people is the one time of the day they use hand eye coordination, and if you’ve driven in commuting traffic versus mid morning you know the difference. I think it would be a good first step away from an expensives energy intensive form of personal transportation. I hope someday soon we can simply tap our phones and a publicly owned self driven car would appear in front of us. I’m sure there are many other things we could be spending thousands a year on. I was instigated, as with many things, by some link or another on the net. In this case to Fast Company which is maybe a business mag or car mag I don’t know.
