[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-20 I’m glad I am not the only one who has noticed that the state and federal courts have been too deferential to Donald Trump. Michael Steele has a good summary of how I feel. Would ANYONE else — mob boss or just average Joe Blow — who acted like Trump not be in jail for contempt of court? If a gag order was placed on any of us in court and we gave the judge the middle finger, would we be out and about while our violations of court orders are appealed to a higher court? Steele has pointed out that Trump is tying our legal system in knots because judges are trying to appease Trump. Former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair Michael Steele said in an interview that former President Trump deserves to be jailed for his consistent attacks on judges and court officials, often in violation of court order. “It’s enormously dangerous,” he said Saturday on MSNBC. “I’m just shocked that we’ve allowed this to get this far.” Steele suggested Trump, who is the GOP front-runner for president in 2024, was getting unfair treatment from those who are trying to appease him and his base and trying not to appear political. “Put his ass in jail. That’s how you end it. That’s how it stops,” Steele said. “Now, yeah, people will be mad, and they’ll be upset. But there is no other person on this planet — and certainly not in this country — who would be given the kind of grace that Donald Trump has been given to run his mouth the way he has, attacking the clerks, attacking the judges, attacking the prosecutors, personally, threatening them.” Emphasis is mine. Basically, Trump is trying to convince the courts and the rest of us that all his speech is protected because it is “political speech.” And the courts have taken their time and ignored the simple fact of Jan 6th when dealing with Trump. He instigated an insurrection with his speech. People were killed, and more than a hundred were injured. How hard is it to understand that Trump has used speech to incite violence? But no. We have the courts giving Trump all kinds of latitude that many of his foot soldiers on Jan 6th were not given. How many diaries have you all read on here that showed the laughable arguments from some of the worst Jan 6th insurrectionists that were relatively quickly dismissed by the courts? I’ve lost count to be honest. And Trump’s “legal” arguments are just as awful as his foot soldiers. But Trump gets to threaten judges, prosecutors, witnesses, and law clerks, and he has gotten hit with two gag orders. If I did that I would be in jail. But we have one judge who has only fined Trump and doesn’t want to throw his ass in jail. The other judge had a gag order, then stayed it, then put it back in place. And Trump gets to appeal this gag to a higher court. And we get to see the appeals court debate if Trump’s speech has been abridged by the gag order. For real? If you listen to what Trump’s lawyers argued today in court, Trump’s political speech is absolute. Everything is political speech and is protected. Since when the hell has free speech been absolute? I can’t help but go back to what all the legal analysts have been reporting for years now. No judge wants to put a former president in jail. Period. And this is the only reason why the courts have given deferential treatment to Trump.
