White to move and mate in two #434 - Juno flies through the Io Plasma Torus [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-21 The NASA Juno spacecraft, which orbits around Jupiter every 38 days, will have its next close approach (aka Perijove 56) around 7:15 a.m. ET tomorrow morning Nov 22. A few hours earlier at 3:10 a.m. ET, it will cross the orbit of Jupiter’s volcanic moon Io. Io will be on the opposite side of Jupiter, but Io will travel through what is known as the "Io Plasma Torus". The "Io Plasma Torus" is a doughnut shaped region around Jupiter composed of hot ionized gas (plasma). It is caused by Jupiter's strong magnetic field which rotates faster than Io and the dispersal of about 1,000 kg/s of material (mainly SO2 but also NaCl and atomic S, O, Na, Cl and K) by Io into the planetary magnetosphere. It glows in UV wavelengths. Some of the ions are pulled into Jupiter's atmosphere along the magnetic lines of force and create auroras in the planet's upper atmosphere. Now, let’s keep solve today’s electrifying puzzle composed by noted British chess composer Godfrey Heathcote (1870 - 1952) in 1911, 100 years before the launch of Juno. P.S. The chess puzzle is published on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. ET. It is customary for advanced players to wait till midnight ET before posting the full solution. Before then, they provide some stats about the solution (e.g., the minimum number of distinct checkmate moves), help guide others, and sometimes post hints. But there are no hard-and-fast rules; feel free to post comments as you please.
