Republicans Eating Their Own -- Minnesota Edition [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-28 A group of delegates to the Minnesota Republican Party State Central Committee recently submitted a proposal for a vote to remove the state party’s leadership. Their reasoning? Fiscal ineptitude, incompetent management, and a continued string of election losses. It is well known that the Rs have not won a state-wide election (Senator or constitutional officer) since Tim Pawlenty’s razor-thin re-election in 2006. No Republican presidential candidate has won here since Richard Nixon in 1972 (though Regan in 1984 and Trump in 2016 came relatively close). This ongoing streak has led to a party apparatus that is in a precarious position. This despite the state really being purplish rather than deep blue. The Minnesota Reformer has the story: A group of delegates and alternates to the State Central Committee laid out their case in a letter for removing Hann, who was elected in 2021 after a federal sex trafficking scandal and allegations of a toxic work environment led to the fall of former Chair Jennifer Carnahan. The state Republican party has been financially struggling — in part due to the cost of dealing with the Carnahan fallout — and divided over former President Donald Trump. The insurgent group claims Hann failed to responsibly manage GOP resources and maximize support for 2022 candidates, contributing to a dismal election for Republicans in which Democrats won a trifecta. Recently former party chair Carnahan and the party itself settled their competing lawsuits against, with nobody coming out the clear winner. Carnahan sued the party last year alleging that leaders made public remarks about her that kept her from getting a new job. She sought at least $50,000 in damages. The party immediately lodged a case against her, alleging mismanagement by her that had been detrimental to the GOP. One big issue with the current state of the Rs in Minnesota comes down to $$. While not broke, they are not in very good shape either. Federal Election Commission reports show the party with $145,000 cash on hand, but $414,000 in debts. The most recent state campaign finance report, which doesn’t include any 2023 data, shows $8,000 cash on hand, and $76,000 in debts. The other major criticism against party leadership has been results of recent elections. Last year’s governor candidate duo of Scott Jensen and Matt Birk was so toxic it basically drug the entire ticket down, resulting in the DFL not only retaining the state house, but retaking the state senate. Senate Rs were essentially left to bleat on about Dems supporting pedophiles. Seriously. It was pathetically comical. The party’s central committee will meet on Saturday, December 9, where Chairman Hann’s fate will be deliberated, barely two years after he was chosen to lead the party out of its funk. So far, the funk continues.
