[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-29 Welcome to Bookchat! Where you can talk about anything; books, plays, essays, and audio books. You don’t have to be reading a book to come in, sit down, and chat with us. You may have heard about the National Book Awards a couple of weeks ago. Drew Barrymore was slated to host, then was uninvited when she lost her mind and stated she was going to start her show back up during the WGA strike. They invited LeVar Burton instead. “Before we get going, are there any Moms for Liberty in the house?Mom s for Liberty? No? Good. Then hands will not need to be thrown tonight.” Censorship was a big topic at the awards. "On the home front, we are fighting for control of truth and how we interpret truth in this country," Burton said. "Books are being banned, words are being silenced, and writers and others who champion books are under attack.” And the Moms for Liberty did their expected pearl-clutching: “American moms weep as a childhood favorite, Reading Rainbow, calls for physical attacks against us because we are protecting the innocence of our children, @levarburton, why have you sunk so low?” Yes, all they want to to decide what everyone else can read, the history that will (or won’t) be taught; why would anyone be upset about that? There were pre-recorded introductions for many categories from Oprah, Julie Andrews, Matthew McConaughey, Samin Nosrat, Trevor Noah and Dua Lipa. Blackouts by Justin Torres won for fiction and The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History by Ned Blackhawk won for nonfiction. You can find all the winners and even watch the ceremony here: www.nationalbook.org/... and another awesome response to censorship: x P!nk gives away 2,000 banned books at Florida concerts "Books have held a special joy for me from the time I was a child, and that's why I am unwilling to stand by and watch while books are banned by schools," said @Pink in a statement about the giveaway https://t.co/zR8w9gvrPB — PEN America (@PENamerica) November 16, 2023 And there’s Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, that gives books to kids all over the world. They even give audio and Braille books to kids with visual impairments. (Anyone with a visual or physical impairment can borrow audio or Braille books from the National Library Service, they will send you the player for the audio books and mail cartridges; or for people who are okay with technology, there is an app and you can listen to the books on a smartphone or tablet. For people who are great with technology, there’s even downloadable Braille.)
