The Carters: a loving story [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-11-29 After watching Amy Carter read an old love letter from her dad Jimmy Carter to his sweetheart Rosalynn from when he was serving in the Navy, I thought, these people really know how to LOVE! While theirs is a beautiful love story, their love of all humanity was apparent in everything they did. They walked the walk of their faith. Everyone knows about their building homes for Habitat for Humanity and that was just the tip of the goodness iceberg. Their phenomenal work through the Carter Center (cartercenter.org) is even more profound and widespread. Most of DKos readers are probably aware, but I’d urge those who are not familiar with the Carter Center to take a look. All the quotes below are from the website. The Carters saw the suffering from tropical diseases, so the Carter Center created the International Task Force for Disease Eradication. They focused on six preventable diseases and have been successful in virtually elimnating Guinea worm disease and are close to eradicating others. We believe access to health care is a human right, especially among poor people afflicted with disease who are forgotten, ignored, and often without hope. Just to know that someone cares about them not only can ease their physical pain but also remove an element of alienation and anger that can lead to hatred and violence. -Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter Mrs. Carter was instrumental in the mental health initiatives. Mrs. Carter played a key role in the passage of the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008, which ensures that mental illnesses are covered by insurance at parity with other illnesses. The Carter Center promotes peace throughout the world with their Peace Program which monitors elections. Its scope is so vast I cannot do it justice, so I’ll just quote their website. Beyond elections, the Center seeks to deepen democracy by nurturing full citizen participation in public policy-making and by helping to establish government institutions that bolster the rule of law, fair administration of justice, access to information, and government transparency. A culture of respect for human rights is crucial to permanent peace. The Center supports the efforts of human rights activists at the grass roots, while also working to advance national and international human rights laws that uphold the dignity and worth of each individual. When democracy backslides or formal diplomacy fails, the Center offers conflict resolution expertise and has furthered avenues for peace in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia. The world is lucky that the Carters found each other and gave humanity the gift of their love.
