[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-12-01 If Trump wins, Republicans are coming for your health care. Most of them have been disciplined enough not to say it out loud. But this week, Trump made it crystal clear. Here’s what he posted on Truth Social: “We should never give up.” That’s what Trump believes: that the GOP should never give up trying to rip away health coverage from tens of millions of Americans. That the GOP should never give up on eliminating a law that ensures that Americans 26 years old and under can stay on their parents’ health insurance. That’s a provision that our own Tammy Baldwin created. Trump wants it gone. Trump believes that the GOP should never give up on terminating protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Which, ultimately, is every one of us. Many young people can scarcely imagine that, for until roughly a decade ago, someone who had previously been sick could simply be turned down flat when they attempted to buy health insurance on the individual market. For the rest of us, the memory is still vivid, and often painful. It happened to my family. Maybe it happened to yours. And it’s equally easy to forget how close the GOP came to actually achieving this foul objective just six years ago. In 2017, the House passed a repeal of the Affordable Care Act… and the Senate came within one vote of passing it as well. You’d better believe that they’ll try again in 2025 if they have the power to do so. And it’s not just Trump. Derrick Van Orden campaigns on a full repeal. California banker Eric Hovde, plotting a run against Tammy Baldwin, ran ads in his 2012 Senate race that said “we need to repeal and replace Obamacare in its entirety,” and vowed to “defund every aspect of the ACA” if he reached the Senate. All the Wisconsin Republicans who were in Congress in 2017—Mike Gallagher, Glenn Grothman, and Ron Johnson—voted enthusiastically for repeal. And it’s not hard to guess how Brian Steil, Tom Tiffany, and Scott Fitzgerald would vote if they had the chance. There are a million things in the news at any given moment. But part of our collective job is to zero in on the things that truly illustrate the difference between the world voters will live in if the GOP wins next year, and the world we’ll build if Democrats win up and down the ballot. A vote is a choice between those worlds. And a future where the fundamental right to health care is undermined—rather than strengthened—is a future that very few voters would choose. When Trump posted about attacking health care, the Biden campaign, appropriately, shined a spotlight on it. Trump responded—by doubling down. Let’s keep that spotlight shining, and make sure, in this final month of 2023, that the stakes become ever starker in the months to come.
