Vietnam

Seventeen years ago we toured Vietnam with tour company Overseas Adventure Travel. A few months ago we reflected back on all our travels, and decided the most fun had been Vietnam, so we booked exactly the same tour. It is similar, with a few changes. One feature of OAT is that the travel group is limited to 16.

Vietnam is a long narrow country. We travel from the north to the south. Cities we visit are Hanoi, a ship overnight on Halong Bay, Hue, Hoi An, Nah Trang, Dalat, and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). In-country transportation is by bus and two short flights. We stay in 4 star hotels, the websites of which I have checked out, and they look beyond fabulous, with nice rooms and rooftop bars and even pools.

As a dedicated foodie I’m especially looking forward to culinary experiences. Many meals are included on the tour, but we have days “on our own”, so we can choose. Within .3 miles of our Hanoi hotel are 128 restaurants! The French influence is strong, so I hope we can go to Maison Vie at least once.

I have been checking the weather forecasts compulsively (hourly) and it looks as though there will be rain on many days, though not heavy. We’ll manage.

The flight there is a grueling 30 hours, with a 3 hour layover in Tokyo.

I won’t bring my laptop and will avoid news for a month. We’ll see about that. See y’all in 2024.
