[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-12-04 I have to confess that I missed this bit of news with regards to the right wing extremist Ammon Bundy and his legal troubles. It’s extremely confusing, but Bundy had been arrested on a contempt of court warrant for his actions after the FIRST TRIAL involving defamation against St Luke’s Hospital. Bundy lost that defamation suit, and the court awarded damages of $52 million dollars to St Luke’s. As I pointed out previously, Bundy failed to comply with the court orders, but I missed that St Luke’s took Bundy to court A SECOND TIME(!) and got him ARRESTED! Bundy made bail, and it is then he did a runner. Yes, there is another arrest warrant out for Ammon Bundy. This is all very Trumpian. And if you are confused, it’s because this is SOP for right wing crooks. This is what happened back in August 2023: After being sued Friday afternoon a second time by St. Luke’s Health System, anti-government activist Ammon Bundy was arrested that evening on a contempt of court warrant stemming from his first lawsuit from the health system. Bundy was arrested Friday night, posted bail early Sunday morning and appeared in court in a temporary restraining order hearing on Monday to address the second lawsuit filed by St. Luke’s, which alleges Bundy has made fraudulent property transfers to evade collection of $26 million in damages awarded to the hospital system in its initial lawsuit against him, People’s Rights Network and his campaign for governor. At the Monday hearing in Gem County, District Judge Brent Whiting ordered Bundy, his wife Lisa Bundy, associated group People’s Rights Network and Bundy’s campaign for governor to not transfer any property over the next two weeks and limit their cash expenses to under $5,000. Whiting has also scheduled a hearing to consider a more lasting preliminary injunction in the new lawsuit later this month. “Mr. Bundy, on behalf of himself and his entities, has made clear he’ll do whatever it takes, including apparently arming himself at his front door to prevent my clients to collect on their judgements,” attorney Bob Faucher, representing St. Luke’s and three of its employees harassed by Bundy and his associates, told the judge. “My clients and their attorneys will not be intimidated, and so we are going to try to collect on their judgements. And this is the first stage of doing that.” As I pointed out before, this is when Bundy “sold” his home to a one of his friend’s for $250,000 and paid “rent” to him. By the way, the home is 4, 760 square feet. Anyway, Bundy gave St Luke’s and the judge the middle finger. This is when St Luke’s took him back to court, and the judge ordered Bundy’s arrest. Bundy was released from jail around 1:30 a.m. Sunday on a $10,000 bond, Sgt. White, with the Gem County Sheriff’s Office, told the Idaho Capital Sun. White declined to share his first name. Bundy is due back in Ada County Court on his contempt case for arraignment at 10 a.m. Aug. 29. If he does not show up, he will forfeit his $10,000 bond and a bench warrant will be issued for his arrest, court records show. Bundy’s contempt case would be handled by District Judge Nancy Baskin. Baskin presided over the jury trial for the original lawsuit last month. She has not yet issued a judgment confirming the amounts owed, which would allow the hospital system’s attorneys to begin to collect the damages awarded. Bundy, in a tweet Sunday night, said he made it home, and thanked people for their prayers. “I wonder if they will ever leave my family alone? This could happen to you…,” he said, linking to a video about the case. At Monday’s proceedings, Bundy said he felt attacked. “The largest corporation in Idaho is attacking me because I’m exposing them. … I do not see how I could go up against this monster in court,” Bundy said. Boo hoo hoo. Typical Trumpian projection going on here. This from the man who sicced a mob on the hospital. Bundy claimed that St Luke’s was involved in child sex trafficking, and the mob attacked the hospital. This was because one of Bundy’s supporters grandkid ended up in the emergency room, and the hospital contacted child protective services because the child was malnourished and dehydrated. Now, it turns out that Bundy was going to go through a second trial over this issue, but this time the issue was contempt of court. But guess what happened next? Former Idaho gubernatorial candidate Ammon Bundy — who was arrested in August on contempt of court charges — has a new warrant out for his arrest after skipping the first day of his court trial. The trial, set to start Monday, would have focused on contempt of court charges requested by private attorneys representing St. Luke’s Health System and several medical professionals, who were awarded a combined $52 million in damages this year after suing Bundy, associate Diego Rodriguez and groups linked to them. “My entire life has been consumed by political prosecutions. I must now do what is necessary to sustain my family,” Bundy wrote in an email to the court. After reading Bundy’s email to a courtroom of attorneys and Bundy supporters on Monday, Ada County District Court Judge Nancy Baskin announced that she’d issue a warrant for Bundy’s arrest, raising the bond to $250,000. Baskin revoked Bundy’s $10,000 of bond paid on his first arrest warrant, issued in April by a previous judge overseeing the case. “This court is doing everything in its power to protect Mr. Bundy’s rights, to give him an opportunity to confront and cross-examine witnesses, to have his motion to dismiss heard. I simply cannot do that unless he is actually at court,” Baskin said. Bundy is being charged with civil and criminal contempt for allegedly violating court orders issued by a previous judge in a lawsuit brought by St. Luke’s Health System that required him to remove defamatory statements from the internet and to not intimidate or harass witnesses in the lawsuit. If convicted in the first contempt trial, Bundy could face up to six months in jail, Baskin previously ordered. The maximum legal penalty for each civil contempt penalty is $5,000 and five days in jail. Bundy and Rodirguez did not attend the two-week jury trial in July, which Rodriguez appealed to the Idaho Supreme Court. Several witnesses who testified in the July trial said that webpages focused on harassing them were still online, despite the previous order barring Bundy, Rodriguez and their groups from threatening or intimidating witnesses affiliated with the lawsuit. Bundy applied for a public defender ahead of the contempt trial, but withdrew his request the same day as he was scheduled for a hearing on the request, which he did not attend. “Once again, Mr. Bundy thinks he can simply say he does not need to be in court. Again, that is not how the rule of law works in this country,” Baskin said. If Bundy does not appear in court after being arrested on a new warrant, the court “will set a bond so high that I don’t think he can post it,” Baskin said. Bundy did appear in court in August after he was arrested on contempt of court charges. So this is where you can get lost. Because Bundy decided to quit the first contempt of court trial, he now will have to have ANOTHER CONTEMPT OF COURT TRIAL! And it appears this is both a criminal and civil contempt trial. And if they ever find the asshole and keep him in jail for the trial, Bundy could get up to six months in jail if convicted.
