Kitchen Table Kibitzing 12/5/2023: Salmagundi, Part 2 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-12-05 Ernst Eitner: View of the Alster at Night (1895) Good evening, Kibitzers! When I was messing around trying to get Craiyon to depict a Thanksgiving table without a roast turkey so hideously twisted as to be alarming rather than festive, the site apparently detected my frustration and started offering other prompts that, I guess, it felt it could draw better? It seems to feel much more comfortable depicting hot chocolate, although surely Childe Hassam would paint a more symmetrical cup and saucer. It was a pleasant enough image to keep, though, and add a KTK banner to. The thing about asking for Impressionists is that, if something’s a little wonky-looking, it’s easier to look past it. (That’s how I ended up with that Renoir dinner table.) As you know, side pocket and Mrs. sp are off to their fabulous Vietnam trip for the rest of the month. (They’ll be back a bit earlier, actually, but then they’re going somewhere else!) So, the disposition of the remaining December Sundays is: 12/10: Winter ambiance 12/17: BREAKING! CHRISLOVE WILL POST KTK! I am so pleased he is able to do this, because we surely have missed his KTK diaries. 12/24: Christmas Eve open thread/house, with music and refreshments. 12/31: New Year’s Eve open thread/house, also with music and refreshments. I am mostly posting this schedule so that remembrance and nomandates can see we have the dates covered and they need not worry. Anyway, tonight, we have another gripping episode of “As the Widely-Assorted Unrelated Videos Turn”. Just to wrap up the fall holiday season, Hank Green explains why the date of Thanksgiving dances around like that. [4:30] We met the Strong Towns organization in a KTK last year about the Not Just Bikes YouTube channel. Their latest video wonders why Chicago developed in a much more livable way than other North American cities, and where we went wrong in our ideas about development. [14:30] A clip from PBS's Native America series' episode "Language Is Life" looks at the version of Star Wars dubbed in the Navajo language. (You can view the whole episode at the link.) [6:10] Steve Shives is a comedian and commentator on YouTube whose channel's "About" statement is Videos about politics, social issues, Star Trek, pop culture, and general smartassery and tomfoolery. He/Him He has a series depicting Republicans "saying the quiet parts out loud" to various potential constituencies, and he's pretty much got their number. This one depicts them saying the quiet parts to women. [17:16] The British TV series Food Unwrapped investigates what paprika is and where it comes from. [6:06] If you have been thinking you'd like to know what all the fuss is about Doctor Who, but despair of ever figuring out the important background points for a British series that's been airing periodically since 1963, you're in luck! The WhoCulture channel gets you caught up for the upcoming 60th anniversary (and there's plenty more detail at their channel). [15:42] This TED-Ed video examines why it is so hard to cure the common cold, and whether there might ever be a vaccine. [5:17] The CollegeHumor troupe (who are now known as Dropout) present medieval Black Mirror episodes. [4:55] Gotta have food, right? Chef John makes easy homemade pumpkin butter. [7:46] All the leaves are brown, and the sky is gray. I set out to put Jose Feliciano himself here, but I liked this cover so much, it’s here instead. Florida cover band Boyce Avenue is made up of three brothers, Alejandro, Daniel, and Fabian Manzano. (One of them went to Harvard Law School, but he likes doing this better.) They styled their version of California Dreamin' after the Feliciano cover of the Mamas and Papas song. [2:52] To close with a little holiday number, the Parody Project brings us a new song to the tune of Good King Wenceslaus, all about a bad fake king. [3:09] Stop the presses! They also dropped a new one an hour ago! (Obviously, no one’s going to miss the chance to skewer George Santos.)
