Ohio History Center: Animals with expanded ranges (museum exhibit) [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-12-06 The natural history displays in the Ohio History Center in Columbus include animals whose ranges have expanded. According to the Museum: “Today Ohio is a different world from the Ohio Country known to the Indians and pioneers. There is less forest, more grassland, and more edge habitat between woodlots and fields. While many animals lost habitat when Ohio’s original forests were cleared for farms, other animals benefitted from the change.” Shown above is Coyote (Canis latrans). According to the Museum: “Prior to 1900 the coyote was found only west of the Mississippi River. By 1919 coyotes began to be seen in Ohio—drawn by agricultural grasslands and the absence of competition from the timber wolf.” Shown above is Badger (Taxidae taxus). According to the Museum: “Badgers dig underground tunnels in grasslands to make their homes, as well as to dig out and catch the ground squirrels, rabbits, and other small grassland animals they eat. The first reports of badgers in Ohio occurred in the late 1800s. today, badgers sightings are very sporadic in south-central, southwestern and north-western Ohio. They are considered rare in the state.” Shown above is Brown-Headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) Shown above is Opossum (Didelphis virginiana) According to the Museum: “The opossum, North America’s only pouched animal, was reported as early as 1772 but was rare in Ohio prior to 1900. As a result of the elimination of predators and it adaptation to many habitats, opossums are now very common.” More natural history exhibits Ohio History Center: Gone from Ohio, extirpated animals (photo diary) Ohio History Center: Extinct and endangered animals (museum exhibit) Ohio History Center: Skulls (photo diary) Ohio History Center: A collection of minerals (photo diary) Montana Natural History Center: Birds (photo diary) Montana Natural History Center: Skulls and Skeletons (photo diary) Museums 101: Birds of the World (Photo Diary) Museums 101: Water Birds, Arctic Birds (Photo Diary) [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/12/6/2209670/-Ohio-History-Center-Animals-with-expanded-ranges-museum-exhibit?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=more_community&pm_medium=web Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
