A Round Up Of Today's Climate News [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-12-14 From Reuters 12.14.23 Despite COP28 deal on fossil fuels, 1.5C goal likely out of reach Scientists say that a global temperature rise beyond 1.5C above the preindustrial average will trigger catastrophic and irreversible impacts, from melting ice sheets to the collapse of ocean currents. But year after year, that target slips further away - with the world's planet-warming emissions still rising, and temperatures hitting new heights. This year will be the hottest ever on record, with the global average for 2023 a sweltering 1.46C above preindustrial levels. If countries are to have even a 50-50 chance of limiting warming to 1.5C, they can emit only another 250 billion metric tons or so of carbon dioxide. At current emissions levels, that will be met in just six years, according to an October 2023 study in the journal Nature Climate Change. www.reuters.com/… From The Hill 12.14.23 Arctic suffered hottest summer on record: NOAA Summer air temperatures in the Arctic were the highest ever recorded this year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) revealed in its annual report on the region. “The overriding message from this year’s report card is that the time for action is now,” NOAA administrator Rick Spinrad said. “NOAA and our federal partners have ramped up our support and collaboration with state, tribal and local communities to help build climate resilience. At the same time, we as a nation and global community must dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions that are driving these changes.” thehill.com/… From The Guardian 12.8.23 What happens if the 1.5C target for global heating is missed? “Tipping points are tipping earlier than expected,” said David King, former chief scientific adviser to the UK government. “Ice covering the north pole for hundreds of thousands of years is receding instead of reflecting sunlight back into space.” The speed at which 1.5C is approaching has shocked many climatologists. Several influential scientists say it will be years rather than decades before the most ambitious Paris target is breached. Drought, storms and flooding become more frequent and severe with each extra fraction of a degree of warming. With half a degree less breathing space, the non-human inhabitants of the planet will suffer considerable losses, which adds to stress on pollination, water quality and other biological components of the planetary life-support system. A warming world affects the health of the world’s oceans. Acidification and oxygen depletion put pressure on fisheries on which billions of people depend. “Tipping points are tipping earlier than expected,” said David King, former chief scientific adviser to the UK government. “Ice covering the north pole for hundreds of thousands of years is receding instead of reflecting sunlight back into space.” www.theguardian.com/… From Politico 12.14.23 It’s Only a Matter of Time Before a Tsunami Hits the Northwest It is, in the words of the Emergency Management Division, “expected to be the largest natural disaster ever in the United States.” And the question isn’t whether there will be a quake and tsunami but when. www.politico.com/...
