If you don’t know me, I am an American Jew with some family and more friends, Arab and Jew, in Israel, and Muslim, Christian, and secular Palestinian friends in the the West Bank and here in the US.

I am not unbiased. When it comes to what side I support in the current conflict, I support the innocent.

A recent dinner party I attended left me quite dispirited. In brief, five couples, Jew and gentile, inter-faith, not interfaith, all well-educated, successful, liberally-minded people fell into an hour and half discussion that degenerated into “Israel evil, no Hamas evil/Hamas evil, no Israel evil”. Interestingly, who supported which side did not fall along demographic categories. I, uncharacteristically, did not speak much, other than to say near the end of the discussion that I found it very dispiriting that such an accomplished and empathetic group of people couldn’t do better then settle on XXXX is evil, because there isn’t anywhere to go from that.

Per Wikipedia, the civilian death toll in Gaza has reached nearly 19,000 — nearly 8,000 of whom are children. And Most Israelis want Hamas crushed despite Gaza casualties. As a reminder: the Oct. 7 Hamas attack killed around 1,300 civilians with two hundred hostages taken.

Also in the news, Biden claimed two days ago that Israel is loosing global support, which I take to mean he will not tolerate Israel’s war in Gaza indefinitely.
