There are far too many people in the world who believe themselves “powerful” when all they really have is the illusion of power derived from wealth. They buy power when their fragile egos cannot stand to be refused, they do not hold it themselves. They posture and strut, believing themselves above the rules that govern everyone else and, all too often, their wealth allows them to purchase leniency from the systems enforcing those rules — or sycophancy from the people that operate those systems.

Hubris, ate.

Or, in it’s most common modern western rendition, “Pride goeth before the fall.”

Hubris, overweening pride, is followed by Ate, utter destruction — Usually as a direct consequence of the pride’s folly.

Rudolph Guiliani may still be facing prison time in ongoing criminal cases or in others for which he is yet to be indicted, but to him that’s a lesser threat — after all, in his mind, surely his reputation and resources would make it a holiday at club fed, in some minimum security place.

But now those resources are gone.

This is the proper, and most stinging, punishment to be handed to these leeches attached to our societies. Leave them penniless, without a pot to piss in. Take away the thing that gave them their illusion of power.
