Do Doctors Belong in Prison? [1]

The Texas abortion disaster is intolerable to me, and I don’t even have the equipment to ever need one. As I understand it, a woman whose life is obviously threatened by her non-viable fetus is being refused an abortion because she is not near enough to death yet. This is not like people waiting in line for a transplant where sometimes they take the sickest people first. The laws were written purposely vague in order to tie up potential exceptions long enough for the pregnancy to take its course, even if that includes killing the mother.

There is a clear option here that while drastic is what needs to be done, in my opinion: the doctors involved need to go ahead with the procedure, even though they are risking their freedom, their careers, and even their safety.

Why? Because those men and women who have been trained in reproductive health have taken a Hippocratic Oath to do what is best for the patient. That oath did not include a clause allowing exceptions for laws created by maniacal women-hating political hacks looking to surf an ultra-religious wave to gain or maintain power.

Yes, some doctors will suffer. But in the mean time, the cases in the courts will not be discussing whether a particular woman should be allowed to get the treatment she needs. Doctors allegedly occupy a moral high-ground in our society, and I think it’s time for them to take this step. I would personally contribute to a defense fund for the brave souls who do so.
