How to win the Kobayashi Maru [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-12-19 For those of you that are not total nerds and old as hell the Kobayashi Maru was featured in Star Trek II the Wrath of Khan. It is a simulator that all Starfleet officers up for command take. It is a “no win” scenario designed to test how a captain deals with failure and the loss of their crew. James Kirk ended up cheating on the test so he could win anyway of course. That is all to say, the test of a leader, the no-win scenario — Israel and Palestine. The United States had been working for years to normalize relations with several gulf states, right before Oct 7 Saudi Arabia was going to sign a historic treaty normalizing relations with Israel. Until Iran-backed Hamas sparked a war on Oct. 7 by launching a devastating attack on Israel, both Israeli and Saudi leaders had been saying they were moving steadily towards a deal that could have reshaped the Middle East. — Reuters All the sudden all that is on hold. The primary target of such a treaty would be Iran and its allies. No wonder Iran backed Hamas attacked Israel and messed all that up. But how does Iran pull enough weight to do something like that? They are backed by Putin of course, who is trading god knows what treasure and technologies to them for their drones and other equipment. It’s still just a war for oil. The information age and future drone wars I think will be fought between US and its allies and China, probably over the South China Sea and Taiwan or maybe China will get into it with India, another wild card. However, the old Cold War powers of tank divisions and infantry, is dying its last death in the fields of Ukraine. It’s the old petro-states Iran and Russia, with North Korea mixed in looking for a place in its already failed vision of a global future. Don’t get me wrong, while I believe those nations are doomed to be forever backwards unless something internally changes, that does not mean they can’t cause a lot of pain during their global downfalls. The point is without Putin, Iran becomes irrelevant, especially if Saudi Arabia joins “the western” world. Without Iran Hamas and a lot of other “terrorist” groups in the Middle East become irrelevant. Palestinians will have to make a deal without them. If you leave Russia alone, Iran will grow in power and the Middle East will further destabilize giving Russia and Iran more power as oil prices go up, and less incentive for the Saudis to normalize relations. Iran will never let a deal be reached in Palestine. They will always use terror to sabotage it. They will always be able to do this if Russia keeps sponsoring them. How do you beat the Kobayashi Maru test of Israel and Palestine — change the rules, go after Putin.
