Morning Open Thread: Beer & Skittles [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-12-20 I should imagine that we all know what beer is: a fermented, mildly alcoholic beverage. And then there’s the skittles...are they candy? These are NOT the skittles you’re looking for... Wrong! This version of skittles is a game, not dissimilar to bocce and bowling. The phrase “[beer] porter and skittles” is from Charles Dickens in The Pickwick Papers, but most probably was in general usage before then. When I bowled a bit in college, it was always fun, even though at best I could only get to mediocre. But I would still love it — if my shoulder would let me play. Whenever I’ve bowled, there was always an automatic pin-setting machine. What follows is a very interesting video about the new technology that might replace those pin-setters — and why some bowlers hate it. Pins on Strings [7:36] * 🎳 🎳 🎳 Since we’re on the subject of knocking things around, how about pool? I am thinking 8-ball because it’s the game I know. The game of eight-ball arose around 1900 in the United States as a development of pyramid pool, which allows any eight of the fifteen object balls to be pocketed to win. The game arose from two changes made, namely that the 8 ball must be pocketed last to win, and that each player may only pocket half of the other object balls. By 1925, the game was popular enough for the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company to introduce purpose-made ball sets with seven red, seven yellow, one black ball, and the cue ball, which allowed spectators to more easily see which suit each ball belonged to. en.wikipedia.org/.... And a game that this guy (Chris Melling) really knows. [5:47] * 🎳 🎳 🎳 I have never played bocce ball, but it always looks like fun. The first known documentation of bocce was in 5200 B.C. with an Egyptian tomb painting that depicted two boys playing. The game spread throughout the Middle Easter and Asia, where it was eventually adopted by the Greeks and passed on to the Romans. The game was played by everyone – young or old, man or woman – thanks to its ease and versatility. www.eataly.com/... A short primer on bocce ball [2:19] * 🎳 🎳 🎳 And one last knocking-things-around game: Croquet. Which looks genteel, but can be incredibly cutthroat. So they left the subject and played croquet, which is a very good game for people who are annoyed with one another, giving many opportunities for venting rancor. Rose Macaulay The croquet pro of Napa [4:16]: * 🎳🎳🎳 Have a wonderful day!
