CDC Data Tracker — Provisional Weekly Deaths

While last week’s rate of new hospitalizations was almost flat relative to the previous week, this week saw a renewed 10% increase nationally -- though we’re still more than 40% below last winter’s peak at this point. By way of comparison, weekly deaths are still more than 60% below the peak level reached last winter, though that translates to a continuing annual death toll of around 75,000.

As noted last week, the center of this latest surge continues to shift away from its original locus around the Great Lakes (CDC Region 5), and now seems to be concentrated in the South (Regions 4 and 6) and Northeast (Regions 1 and 2), with a possible additional focus in CA (Region 9).
