Derek summarizes research on what is the best strategy to encourage niceness, forgiveness, generosity in people that are naturally self-interested. It turns out to be an eye-for-an-eye philosophy. Later models gave a little more forgiveness but soon went back to eye for an eye without reciprocation. The later models also showed how a fair society embedded in a not-nice, unforgiving landscape soon started winning along its edges against all other interaction strategies. That is why it's important to have fiercely protective states that protect civil and human rights in the United States. You could also we have to have a little more forgiveness in noisy situations, were percieved injustice may cause overblown reactions. How could this information be used in our political aspirations?
