"My best friend is gone", he said [1]

‘My best friend is gone’, ‘Mr. Goodman’ said, pointing to the seat in his ATV where his dog usually sat. ‘She was poisoned’. ‘I buried her in a nice spot on my property, I can visit her when I want’.

We both knew who did it. I could not speak, I was so angry.

Mr, Goodman has a home ($500K+) on one of the twenty properties in a wooded 400+acre ‘subdivision’ here. Five properties have homes (ours is one), the others have no residents. These properties are spread along several ‘lanes’, each lane more than a mile long, wending their way through the woods.

When weather permits, Mr. Goodman drives his ATV on the lanes, looking for troublesome things, such as limbs fallen in the roadway and trash left by ‘visitors’. His dog always sat alongside him on those trips.

Some properties are not actively used, but a few are used as weekend hunting/drinking camps during October through February.

One camp in particular, near Mr. Goodman’s place, owned by ‘Mr. Badman’, has had a travel trailer set up there every ‘hunting season’ since 2010. This year, there were three such trailers, and several ATV’s, and some old abandoned pickup trucks.

Noise, drinking, shooting are the standard fare there.

Mr. Goodman, who has lived here since 2016, finally had enough, so he reviewed the property covenants, which specifically banned travel trailers, mobile homes, abandoned vehicles, etc.

So he had a lawyer write a letter to Mr. Badman explaining that he was violating the covenants, and that he should remove the banned items or face legal action.

Mr. Badman phoned Mr. Goodman and told him that HE COULD DO WHATEVER HE DAMN-WELL PLEASED ON HIS PROPERTY, and that if Mr. Goodman wanted to try something to end that, there would be consequences.

That was two weeks before the poisoning.

Both myself and Mr. Goodman know that Mr. Badman did it. However Mr. Goodman told me he is unable to prove it, so can do nothing about it. But he will be working with his lawyer to obtain an order to remove the violations, or maybe a get a fine by the County.

Mr. Badman has been a problem since he bought the land. Too long to detail here.

Mr. Badman is a MAGA, with ‘FJB’ truck decals, ‘We don’t call 911’ placards on the power poles, and a ‘God, Guns, Trump’ sign by the driveway.

I will let the readers decide if Mr. Badman is a fringe ‘outlier’ with his ‘Nobody tells me what to do’ attitude and ‘I’ll show them’ actions, or if he is quite representative of the MAGA culture as evidenced here in rural SW MO.

Why do I write this? Because I want to let people here know what these MAGA’s are like. And to re-consider comments complaining that the local Democrats should just talk to these people and they will see the light.
