Against vigilantism [1]

Many commentators from the radical left fringe and the radical right are accusing liberals of hypocrisy for accusing Trump of trying to establish a dictatorship while simultaneously criticizing an attempted assassination against Trump. This may seem like a disconnect for those who dream of vigilantism, but it is completely consistent with liberal values. Liberals look to our institutions to settle these problems — whether elections or criminal law. Liberals support free speech and fair elections. Vigilantism undermines these institutions, just as Trump is trying to do. We are against vigilante violence, and continue to have faith in the institutions through which we protect ourselves.
