Another love letter to Joe [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-07-21 Sorry that half my (few) diaries seem to be reposting letters I’ve written to one politician or another. I’d vowed to stop that, but I had to write to Biden even if he will never read it, and wanted to follow up here in the same vein as the heartfelt GNR love letter. My heart fell when that news alert popped up saying he had dropped out. I share all the concerns about what this means for the race. But my one overwhelming sadness is for Biden. This man, this honorable and decent man who has done so much for us. Who proved his worth many times over. It must have broken his heart to realize he was being thrown overboard in spite of all his accomplishments. He fought so hard and so well for so long, and now they - both the msm media and his own party - hand him this. I hope the message gets through somehow that we valued and respected him. Anyway, my letter: Dear President Biden, I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn today that you were dropping out of the race. I must say that you were not my first choice in the 2020 primary, but I was glad to vote for you after you secured the nomination because I was sure that you would be a good president. Then you blew me away: You weren’t just good, you were frigging awesome. I’m in my late sixties, so I’ve seen a few presidents. You are rivalled only by LBJ in the policy goals that your administration has achieved, and frankly I think you’ve been more consequential. You accomplished so much. Brought the economy back to low unemployment and low inflation, invested in critical infrastructure, did more on climate change that anyone before you, fought to reduce the crushing burden of student loans, and buttressed health care. You reestablished our traditional ties with NATO and brought the US back as the leader of the free world. Your steadfast support of Ukraine is probably the only reason Kyiv still stands and Putin isn’t currently eyeing Estonia and Latvia. And I know that’s just a sampling of what you’ve done. Even more impressively, you accomplished most of this with bipartisan support. Your wisdom and experience made that possible. I have been seething at the media coverage you’ve received, particularly from the NYT. It has been blatantly unfair and biased. They’ve been howling at the gates for a month that you must step down. And then they have the incredible gall to say that you’ve thrown everything into disarray by stepping down with so little time left? How dare they. How *dare* they when they were doing their best to influence public opinion that you should not continue? I hope you know that there are many of us who recognize what an incredible job you have done. I hope you hold your head high, knowing what you have done. I’m sure that you personally will never read this, but maybe it will get counted as a data point in the “Joe, we loved you” column. Am sorry, putting this up and going to bed. It’s been a very long day.
