The Week Ahead: Socorro ISD granted funding for electric buses [1] ['El Paso Matters Staff', 'El Paso Matters'] Date: 2022-10-28 This is your Friday update, which takes a quick look at the week ahead and some developments that El Paso Matters is following. Socorro ISD Awarded $9.8M for Electric Buses: The Socorro Independent School District will receive $9.8 million in federal funds to purchase 25 fully-electric school buses, the Environmental Protection Agency announced Wednesday. The district is waiting to receive the funds before putting the project out to bid. “The pandemic extended timelines for just about everything, but we hope to have the new buses on the ground within 12 months,” SISD Superintendent Nate Carman said. The electric buses will replace decade-old diesel and gas-powered vehicles in the district’s 200-bus fleet. Socorro was the sole district in West Texas to receive funds from the EPA’s Clean School Bus Program, and just one of 13 Texas districts. Ysleta and El Paso ISD applied for program funding, and are currently waitlisted. Canutillo ISD did not apply, a spokesperson confirmed. An EPA release said further grants will be available at a later date. El Pasoan Among Jan. 6 Rioters: An El Pasoan, David Rene Arredondo, 47, has been arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges, including assaulting a law enforcement officer, for his actions during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, the U.S. Attorney’s office announced. Arredondo, who lives on the East Side in the 1200 block of Morgan Marie Street and has voted in the last two Republican Party primaries, was arrested in El Paso on Wednesday and will be prosecuted in Washington, D.C. According to court documents, Arredondo illegally entered the Capitol and is alleged to have grabbed the arm of a law enforcement officer who was trying to stop the mob of rioters from entering the Capitol. By grabbing the officer’s arm and attempting to pull him away from the door, Arredondo sought to facilitate the entry of other rioters into the Capitol.
