Veronica Escobar, Linda Chew, Melissa Ortega talk about challenges, opportunities for El Paso women elected officials [1]

Three elected officials at different stages of their careers will talk this month about the opportunities and challenges facing women seeking office in El Paso.

U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, retired District Judge Linda Chew and State Board of Education member Melissa Ortega will speak during a panel discussion as part of “Change Makers: Elected Women Serving the Borderland.” The event is at 11 a.m. March 31 at the Judson F. Williams Convention Center.

El Paso Matters editor/reporter Cindy Ramirez will moderate the discussion, which will focus on the successes and obstacles the women leaders have seen during their careers.

Tickets are $100 per person or $1,000 a table. A woman elected official will be seated at each table for the event, which is a collaboration between Progress321 and El Paso Matters. Tickets are on sale now.

Escobar has represented El Paso in Congress since 2019. Prior to that, she served as El Paso County judge and as a county commissioner.

Chew was elected as 327th District Court judge in 2000 and re-elected four more times before retiring in 2022. She was El Paso County’s local administrative judge from 2019 to 2022.

Ortega is an educator who was elected in 2022 to represent District 1, which covers much of the U.S.-Mexico border, on the Texas State Board of Education.
