The Week Ahead: Memorial for Pete Duarte set for Saturday [1] ['El Paso Matters Staff', 'El Paso Matters'] Date: 2023-03-24 This is your Friday update, which takes a quick look at the week ahead and some developments that El Paso Matters is following. Pete T. Duarte Pete Duarte Memorial: A celebration of life for Pete T. Duarte, the former community leader and hospital administrator who died on Feb. 4, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at El Paso Community College, 9050 Viscount, B Building. Among his many accomplishments, Duarte and other community leaders established the Father Rahm Social Service and Referral Organization, which in the early 1970s became Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe, Inc. He served as La Fe’s executive director for 12 years. He was the chief executive officer at R.E. Thomason General Hospital, which is now University Medical Center of El Paso, for 14 years. He is survived by his wife, Irma, and her children, Rebecca and Joey; his son, Pedro Duarte; daughters, Marean Duarte and Lilia Jones; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Charter Amendment Discussions: The city of El Paso is hosting a series of community meetings in April to discuss the proposed amendments to the city’s charter on the May 6 ballot. The City Charter is the legal document that defines the city’s organization, powers, functions and essential procedures. The first meeting is at 6 p.m. April 4 at City Hall, 300 N. Campbell. The April 5 meeting is at 5:30 p.m. at the Clardy Fox Library, 5515 Robert Alva. Other meetings are at 6 p.m. April 10 at the Eastside Regional Command Center, 10780 Pebble Hills; April 11 at the Westside Regional Command Center, 4801 Osborne; April 13 at the Mission Valley Regional Command Center, 9011 Escobar; and April 17 at the Northeast Regional Command Center, 9600 Dyer. Early voting for the May 6 election is from April 24 to May 2. Fifth Monkeypox Case: A fifth case of monkeypox has been confirmed in El Paso, according to city public health officials who report that the man in his 20s is recovering at home. The county’s first case was reported in mid-August. Monkeypox is a viral disease similar to smallpox and is transmitted most often by skin-to-skin contact. The main symptom is a rash that will go through several stages, including scabs before healing. The rash can initially look like pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy.
