The Week Ahead: Clinics help immunize children prior to start of school [1]

This is your Friday update, which takes a quick look at the week ahead and some developments that El Paso Matters is following.

Back-to-School Shots: The El Paso Department of Public Health and the nonprofit Immunize El Paso are offering free vaccines against preventable diseases such as tetanus, HPV, polio, measles, meningitis and whooping cough as part of a back-to-school campaign. No appointments are required at the city’s clinics which are open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. The clinics are: Ysleta, 110 Candelaria Road; Henderson, 721 S. Mesa St.; and Northeast, 9566 Railroad Dr. Immunize El Paso is also hosting various pop-up clinics at schools and events through Aug. 12. See the list of locations and times here. Sergio Troncoso

Meet El Paso Matters Book Club Author: As part of the El Paso Matters Book Club activities, author Sergio Troncoso will talk about his latest novel, “Nobody’s Pilgrims,” on July 29 at the El Paso Public Library Sergio Troncoso Branch, 9321 Alameda Ave. The in-person discussion will begin at 4 p.m. and will be moderated by El Paso Matters reporter Diego Mendoza-Moyers. Troncoso’s novel is the third El Paso Matters Book Club selection. The fourth book will be announced during the July 29 discussion. “Nobody’s Pilgrims” is available now at Literarity Book Shop, 5411 N. Mesa St. and will be available for purchase at the event. 1st Case of West Nile Virus: The summer’s first case of the West Nile Virus has been confirmed, city of El Paso Department of Public Health officials said. It was contracted by a man in his 50s who developed neuroinvasive disease and is recovering in the hospital. To protect against the virus, and mosquito bites in general, it is recommended that those outdoors use insect repellents that contain DEET, wear long sleeves, long pants and socks while limiting outdoor activity during the day. It is also recommended that any standing water be drained. Residents can report standing water and mosquito breeding by calling 915-212-6000. Information and tips: visit EPHealth.com.
