Magnitude 6.7 earthquake strikes near border of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and China — Meduza [1] [] Date: 2024-01-22 A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck near the border of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and China on Tuesday, reports Kazakhstan’s Emergency Situations Ministry. The ministry said the epicenter of the quake was in Kyrgyzstan, about 264 kilometers (164 miles) southeast of Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city. The German Research Centre for Geosciences reported the same earthquake in the Kyrgyzstan-Xinjiang border region at a magnitude 7.01, according to Reuters. In Almaty, residents fled their homes as tremors hit 5.0 on the Richter scale. In Shymkent, Kazakhstan, there were magnitude 2.0 tremors, and Kyrgyzstan’s Emergency Situations Ministry reported tremors between 4.0 and 5.0 in Bishkek, the country’s capital. There are currently no reports of casualties in Almaty or in Kyrgyzstan.
