Six months later, he deserted his post in Russia’s Belgorod region and fled to a European country, where he’s now seeking political asylum. Anton says his time in the army “shattered” his worldview and that he now views Russians as “orcs.” He relayed his experience to a journalist from the independent outlet Verstka.
