NATO Resource Conference 2023 – Turning Ambition into Action [1] ['Paolo Giordano'] Date: 2023-05-31 21:32:23+00:00 OTTAWA, CANADA – From May 23rd through May 25th, representatives gathered at the NATO Resource Conference 2023, which included leadership from NATO Headquarters and Allied Command Transformation, as well as national representatives of Canada, to address common-funded capabilities, complex security environments, and the ever-changing challenges of military requirements. The NATO Resource Conference is a collaborative event that provides a platform for open discussion and exchange on resource requirements. This year’s conference focused on “Turning Ambition into Action” and emphasized the importance of better, faster, and smarter common-funded capabilities. The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of National Defence, Canada, as well as NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana, delivered opening remarks on common-funding and its role in delivering capabilities throughout the Alliance. Topics of discussion included organizational culture changes and balancing solutions with innovations. “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success. If the 2023 NATO Resource Conference is an indication, NATO has achieved success. For two days, representatives from NATO, Industry and Nations came together in Ottawa, Canada to look at Organizational Change, Innovation, Risk, and Accountability. A number of ways were discussed on how these goals can be achieved while working towards NATO 2030 and assuring the continued safety of the Alliance. I felt privileged to be part of the organizing team and look forward to further outcomes stemming from the conference,” shared Cameron Beggs, a Resource Planning Officer at Allied Command Transformation that assisted in coordinating the event. NATO common-funded capabilities refer to the collective resources and assets that are comprised of various civil and military budgets, which reinforce the Alliance, providing capabilities towards deterrence, defence, and interoperability. To address emerging security challenges and evolving technologies, NATO utilizes academic and industry innovation, ensuring ambition, agility, and accountability in the development of NATO common-funded capabilities. The objectives of the NATO Resource Conference were inspiration, drawing insights from leaders in capability delivery, followed by reflection, where stakeholders could openly discuss to reach consensus on constructive solutions. Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, General Philippe Lavigne, delivered his opening remarks during the day of reflection: “Today’s programme is subtitled a Call for Action. This call to action is for all of us: the Nations, the Command structure, and the Agencies. As Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, one of my jobs is to provide out best military advice about existing and future threats. From there, help define what we need, collectively as an Alliance. And as we up our game for collective defence, together we need to up our game for capability development.” Additional participants from Allied Command Transformation included Brigadier General Thorsten Jorgensen from Requirements Division and Major General Robert Glab from Resource and Management.
