NATO Centres of Excellence – Military Medicine [1] ['Paolo Giordano'] Date: 2023-06-30 14:51:10+00:00 BUDAPEST, HUNGARY – The NATO Military Medicine Centre of Excellence is a hub of military medical knowledge, providing the Alliance with medical innovation, training opportunities, exercises, and lessons learned. Military medicine has a direct impact on every service member throughout NATO; building a reliable and accessible community of medical expertise improves Alliance-wide readiness. The NATO Military Medicine Centre of Excellence, located in Budapest, Hungary, was established in 2009, providing support to the NATO medical community. Through knowledge sharing, medical training, innovative capability development, and standards development, the NATO Military Medicine Centre of Excellence supports diverse health requirements throughout the Alliance. One example is strengthening medical resilience through joint medical exercises, such as the Vigorous Warrior Multinational Medical Exercise Series, which will be held in Spring 2024 in Hungary. Participating nations will have the opportunity to examine and solidify doctrinal concepts, train with multinational medical providers, and refine their medical assets. The NATO Military Medicine Centre of Excellence provides support and assistance on all medical issues throughout the NATO command structures as well as the civil and military organizations of NATO Member Nations. The NATO Military Medicine Centre of Excellence modified and adapted their capabilities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, transforming into an organization that offers increased hybrid and online deliverables. It has four medical branches, as well as a Directorate and a Support Branch: Force Health Protection Branch (located in Munich, Germany) Interoperability Branch Lessons Learned and Innovation Branch Training Branch Key resources of the NATO Military Medicine Centre of Excellence include the Medical Knowledge Management Portal, which enables uses to create, share, utilize, and manage medical knowledge, enhancing the medical community’s overall readiness. Another resource is the Medical Concept Development and Experimentation Portal, where subject matter experts can collaborate on medical concepts and capabilities, focusing on innovative solutions for the medical challenges of today and tomorrow. Additional offerings include training and evaluation courses, such as Emergency Management of Battlefield Injuries, the NATO Medical Evaluation Course, and Military Psychosocial Incident Management.
