Supreme Allied Commander Transformation General Philippe Lavigne received Chief of Defence of the Slovak Republic, General Daniel Zmeko, for a series of discussions and briefs on the NATO Defence Planning Process, the NATO Warfare Capstone Concept, and the Warfare Development Agenda. These discussions enable better understanding and communication between Slovak military forces and Allied Command Transformation, NATO’s Strategic Warfare Development Command, which is responsible for capabilities, requirements, and the transformation of NATO’s Military Instrument of Power. In 2004, the Slovak Republic joined NATO, alongside Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Romania, and Slovenia; this was the largest wave of enlargement in NATO history, bringing Slovak defence capabilities, experience, and forces into the Alliance. Slovakia hosts a NATO Multinational Battle Group, which includes troops from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovenia, and the United States. Slovakia is also home to NATO’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Centre of Excellence, located into Trenčín; it provides NATO with operational, tactical, and strategic levels of training, development and research, and knowledge management for all issues pertaining to Improvised Explosive Devices and Explosive Ordnance Disposal. Allied Command Transformation is responsible for the transformation of NATO’s military forces, to better prepare for the challenges of today and tomorrow. The NATO Defence Planning Process serves as a framework for the Alliance to coordinate present and future capability requirements, national defence plans, and implementation strategies to ensure NATO’s defence and deterrence postures are met. The NATO Warfighting Capstone Concept addresses new aspects of great power competition, including Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, strategic challenges presented by China, as well as additional considerations like climate and health issues. The Warfare Development Agenda is a planning tool that helps implement the NATO Warfighting Capstone Concept, including Cognitive Superiority, Layered Resilience, Influence and Power Projection, Cross-domain Command, and Integrated Multi-Domain Defence.
