Sweden & NATO Prepare for Military Accession & Integration Process [1] ['Brian Sostak'] Date: 2023-07-20 20:36:39+00:00 NORFOLK, VA – NATO and Sweden have maintained a strong, enduring, and ongoing relationship; agreements were reached between NATO and Sweden during the 2023 NATO Summit, with the final NATO accession and integration process underway, as NATO is preparing to welcome Sweden as the 32nd member of the Alliance. Sweden has long maintained open and regular dialogue with NATO as well as with its Member Nations, including a wide range of practical cooperation, bilateral agreements, and joint engagements. Starting in 1994, Sweden joined the Partnership for Peace programme, followed by the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council in 1997, and most recently, alongside Finland, applied to join NATO in 2022. Sweden has been one of NATO’s most active partners, including strong industry collaboration, resilient military defence infrastructure, and innovative technology. Swedish military forces frequently operate alongside NATO forces, recently in Baltic Operations 2023 and Exercise Aurora 23. “Completing Sweden’s Accession to NATO is a historic step that benefits the security of all NATO Allies at this critical time. It makes us all stronger and safer,” shared Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, after a joint meeting between Mr. Stoltenberg, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson before the 2023 NATO Summit. To become a full member, NATO requires complete ratification amongst Member Nations, which also requires full approval from each Member Nation’s own institutional processes. After these Accession procedures are complete, Sweden will be the 32nd Member Nation of NATO. Allied Command Transformation serves as the Strategic Warfare Development Command of NATO; it helps define future military contexts, identify challenges, and provide opportunities to extend the Alliance’s military edge. Allied Command Transformation also leads the Accession and Integration Working Group that helps facilitate steps needed to ensure that Swedish military forces are interoperable with NATO’s Military Instrument of Power. Functional integration requirements will include: Equipment and Modernization, Force Structures, Education, Training, Exercise, and Evaluation Policy, Logistics, Medical, and many others.
