State expects to resume printing paper titles in February [1] ['Searchlight Staff', 'More From Author', '- December'] Date: 2022-12 The state Department of Revenue said Tuesday in a news release that it expects to receive a shipment of title paper in late January and resume printing all paper titles in mid-February. South Dakota, like other states, uses paper that includes security features to protect vehicle owners against title fraud. A shortage of the paper resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, when other states decreased the number of titles they issued, and vendors who produce the paper reduced their supply accordingly. South Dakota stopped printing paper titles in November in response to the shortage, except for requests made online and approved by the state. The Department of Revenue said in November that paper titles could be issued in some circumstances, such as when the vehicle owner moves out of state or the vehicle ownership is transferred. State revenue officials say 5,114 requests for a paper title have been submitted since the paper shortage began causing delays in issuing titles, and 76.5% of the reviewed applications have been approved. The Division of Motor Vehicles continues to process titles as they are received from county offices. People and businesses can check to see if their title has been processed on a website, https://apps.sd.gov/RV66Renewals/checkvin/NewCheckVIN.aspx. People who need a title printed may request one by completing an online form at https://sddor.seamlessdocs.com/f/1504. People who have lost their paper title and need a duplicate should fill out the form at https://sddor.seamlessdocs.com/f/1002 to have it printed.
