(C) Texas Tribune This story was first published on Texas Tribune.org[1] -------------------- The Blast: Texas redistricting roundup, Collier steps into lieutenant governor race, SD-30 watch [] Date: 2021-10 REDISTRICTING ROUNDUP WHERE WE STAND: The Senate Special Committee on Redistricting heard public testimony this morning on Senate Bill 6, the proposed congressional map, while the House Redistricting Committee heard public testimony on House Bill 1, the proposed Texas House map. The Senate committee advanced the congressional maps, and the entire chamber is expected to give the nod later today. The House committee is also expected to advance the Texas House map, which then heads to a vote of the full chamber. In case you need a refresher, here's the Trib's analysis of the proposed maps for the Texas House, the Texas Senate, the State Board of Education and the U.S. House of Representatives. INCUMBENT KNOCKOUT? U.S. Reps. Sheila Jackson Lee and Al Green, both Black Democrats representing Houston, testified against the proposed congressional map that would pit the two incumbents against each other in 2022. Green and Jackson Lee are two out of five Black members in Texas' 36-person delegation, which is slated to grow to 38 members. The Texas Senate Special Committee on Redistricting voted out the map over their objections. Read about the hearing from the Trib's James Pollard. REDISTRICTING OPERATIVE: State Rep. Todd Hunter, who leads the House Redistricting Committee, said he hired former Wisconsin mapmaker Adam Foltz but had no knowledge of Foltz's political history in Wisconsin. Foltz played a role in a secretive redistricting process there last decade that created maps eventually ruled unconstitutional for diluting the votes of Latinos. Last week, we reported that Foltz was on the Texas redistricting payroll.
