‘Back in the Day’: A new column on New Orleans history [1]

When I moved to New Orleans from Detroit, MI as a teenager back in the day, I did not know anything about the city. The weather, the gigantic insects, the food (Oh Lawd, the food!) was all foreign to me. I had traveled to Monroe, La., every summer to visit my grandmother and other relatives, but as we know, Monroe ain’t New Orleans.

I had so much to learn about this magical city, its history, its culture and its people. All these years later, I still have a lot to learn and explore. I can’t think of a better way to explore the history of the New Orleans metro area than through this new column, “Back in the Day.”

Starting Monday, this column will focus on the historical people, places and events that impacted our area prior to 2006. The goal is to inform, uncover hidden gems, and spark a sense of nostalgia about this special place. It will focus on good times, bad times and everything in between. We want to highlight New Orleans’ quirkiness as well as the important role it has played in national events.

Ultimately, these historical snippets will show us where we have been, explain how we have gotten to where we are, and give insight to where we are going.

If you have wondered about what New Orleans was like in the past or want to reminisce about fond memories of yesteryear, “Back in the Day” is for you.
