The 19th century roots of brass bands that have sprouted many branches who take their traditions seriously. A comprehensive look at one such organization is the Stooges’ book “Can’t Be Faded: Twenty Years in the New Orleans Brass Band Game.” Ethnomusicologist Kyle DeCoste and members of the Stooges Brass Band collaborated on this text, published in 2020 by the University Press of Mississippi. It includes five years of research and interviews with current and past band members. The book “takes readers into the barrooms, practice rooms, studios, tour vans, and streets where the music is made and brotherhoods are shaped and strengthened,” according to the publisher. For those who would like to feel the scenes where the music is made and learn that the music is not entertainment alone, this book offers a new look. The title offers the humor and creativity that is “Big Freedia: God Save the Queen Diva!” The book arrived in stores in 2020 but if you haven’t read it you may want to put it on your list. Author Nicole Balin captures the energy of bounce and the tragedies in Freedia’s personal life including family deaths and staying for two days on her roof after Hurricane Katrina. How all of these experiences evolved into the joyful bounce music and the popular Freedia is a big story worthy of a big personality. Embers “Up from the Cradle of Jazz: New Orleans Music Since World War II” appeared in paperback in 2009, but it is still a great compendium of some of our favorite local celebrities. Jason Berry, Jonathan Foose and Tad Jones write about Irma Thomas, Little Richard, Aaron Neville, Lee Dorsey, Allen Toussaint, Guitar Slim, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, The Meters and The Neville Brothers. There is someone to love in every chapter. Related Republish This Story Republish our articles for free, online or in print, under a Creative Commons license.
