Spanberger has big lead over Stoney in early poll of 2025 gubernatorial primary [1] ['Graham Moomaw', 'More From Author', '- January'] Date: 2024-01 Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger is much better known among Virginia Democrats than Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, according to early poll numbers gauging how familiar voters are with the two Democrats running for governor in 2025. The poll from the Wason Center for Civic Leadership at Christopher Newport University found 52% of Democrats back Spanberger, 8% support Stoney and 40% are unsure. “This early in the campaign season these numbers are likely to heavily reflect name recognition of the candidates and signal that Mayor Stoney has a long way to go in getting his name and message out to voters,” CNU researchers said in their summary of the poll’s findings. Spanberger, a former CIA officer, has served in Congress since 2019 after winning several tough elections in her original district in the Richmond suburbs and — after redistricting — a newly drawn district in Northern Virginia. Stoney, who has been mayor of the capital city since 2017, is a former executive director of the Democratic Party of Virginia who also served as secretary of the commonwealth under former Gov. Terry McAuliffe. Both are seeking the chance to succeed current Gov. Glenn Youngkin when the Republican’s four-year term concludes at the end of 2025. Youngkin can’t run again next year under Virginia’s term limits, but Attorney General Jason Miyares and Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears are considered possible GOP nominees for governor in 2025. Aligning with other recent poll results, the CNU survey of 1,000 registered Virginia voters found 50% approved of Youngkin, compared with 36% approval for President Joe Biden.
