State postpones e-bike rebate application due to technical difficulties • Minnesota Reformer [1]

The Minnesota Department of Revenue opened up the online application for Minnesota’s new e-bike rebate Wednesday morning, but technical issues stalled applications and forced the agency to take the webpage offline and postpone its reopening.

The e-bike rebate will cover up to $1,500 or 75% of the cost of an eligible bike, depending on the buyer’s income.

Lawmakers in 2023 approved $4 million for the program over two years. This year, the Department of Revenue will accept 10,000 applications on a first come, first served basis, and expects to issue around 1,300 rebate certificates.

In a press release, the Department of Revenue did not provide a timeline for the application’s reopening, but said the agency would provide advance notice so applicants can plan ahead.

Dozens of frustrated applicants turned to the website formerly known as Twitter to commiserate and joke about the website crashing.

Once an applicant receives a rebate certificate, they can bring it to a retailer and receive the rebate discount at the time of purchase. Then the state pays the retailer back.
