Mike Weissman is on track to win the Democratic primary election in Colorado’s Senate District 28, unofficial results from the secretary of state’s office show. Weissman won about 55% of the vote, beating out Idris Keith, who had about 45% of the vote, according to results last updated at about 8 p.m. Tuesday night. Associated Press-subscribed outlets reported that the AP called the race for Weissman. Weissman, a lawyer, has represented House District 36 at the Colorado Capitol since 2017. He most recently served as chair of the powerful House Judiciary Committee, which steers some of the most impactful bills in the chamber related to criminal justice and civil liberties. He had endorsements from a handful of Democratic state senators, Attorney General Phil Weiser, U.S. Rep. Jason Crow, the Working Families Party, Colorado AFL-CIO and the Colorado Education Association. Keith, an Aurora attorney, ran for Aurora City Council in 2021 but dropped out before the election. He also ran unsuccessfully to be an Arapahoe County commissioner in 2020. He had endorsements from the Colorado Chamber of Commerce, the Colorado Medical Society and the Colorado Association of Realtors. The race received an unusual amount of outside spending, as reported by The Colorado Sun and the Denver Post. Keith benefited from close to $400,000 in spending from two different groups, including dark-money group Representation Matters. Weissman benefited from close to $300,000 in spending from groups associated with labor, education and conservation. The district is currently represented by the term-limited Sen. Rhonda Fields, who is running for Arapahoe County commissioner. She did not endorse in the race.
