[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-05-01 I used to listen to my son on his discord server and in various gamer chat rooms trying to convince people that Palestinians had full rights, should be allowed to live full lives, and should not be under the thumb of an apartheid ethno-religious regime. As a Jew who comes from a long line of anti-zionists going back to my grandmother, who ran the resettlement committees here in the US for Jews in the 30s and 40s, I was very proud of him trying to convince randoms from around the world of this fundamental principle of human rights. i also regularly warned him that if my experience in college was anything to go by, being overtly pro-Palestinian rights was the fastest way to get every other campus org and the admins at a college (and worst of all, the alums) angry at you. The amount of vitriol i faced in the late 80s for protesting against Israeli government policy was immense, even as it dovetailed so perfectly with our anti-apartheid in South Africa protests. But this was 4 years ago. It seemed abstract to him that to be insufficiently pro-Israel would result in mayors, cops, administrations, college presidents, and fellow students (including those who were being paid by various orgs to create the pro-Israel narrative that predominates in all of our political and media circles) all hating you. These points are no longer abstract to him. And here at DK, a mass movement of young people protesting what they believe to be a genocide as part of a left humanist set of principles is not worthy of our readership, apparently. And that’s just sad. EDIT and here we are in the top 18. So shut my mouth, i guess.
