[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-05-16 Hi all, long time no see! Life keeps interfering with my writing goals, though in April I made a little progress on that front. Slow and steady wins something eventually, right? Come on in, and let’s chat about writing and do a little writing practice. Oftentimes, what we don’t write can be as important to a story as what we do write. The holes or the gaps we leave uncharted are where mystery and intrigue reside and are important to keeping a reader engaged. Maybe you weave these in as you write, or maybe a full draft gets chopped up and sewn back together to create these bits of mystery. The timing of their creation is not important. Just that they’re there, and later they can be mined for flashbacks or the emotional impact of what’s been left in the shadows. Or, you know, if you’re writing a series, you can let those obscured moments pop back on stage in a later book... Using your stock characters or characters from a work in progress, make time pass. For further reading, hark back to (gulp) ten years ago, when SensibleShoes gave us a similar challenge. Choose one: a month a year a decade after Choose one: the World’s Fair (whichever era you like) a terrible breakup (not necessarily a romantic one) the goats destroyed the garden or another scenario meaningful to your characters Try to keep it to 200-250 words.
