TONY DUNBAR RUNNING FOR FLORIDA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-05-18 NEWS RELEASE TONY DUNBAR has announced that he is running for Florida House of Representatives District 75 to replace Michael Grant, who is term limited. His campaign promises to bring civility and common-sense back to government, and he vows to fight for five issues critical to Charlotte and Sarasota Counties: Restore Local Decision Making, Stop Tallahassee's Meddling in Our Local Issues Restore a Woman's Right to Determine Her Own Healthcare Bring Affordable Housing to Young and Working People Prioritize Environment Over Out-of-Control Development Make Insurance Affordable Again Dunbar says, “Tallahassee has co-opted numerous powers that rightfully belong to local communities. These range from big issues, like a county’s right to control growth by increasing development impact fees, down to truly intrusive meddling – local governments can’t regulate or prohibit drones hovering over your house, plastic grocery bags at Publix, coral-destroying sunscreen products, gas-powered leaf blowers, or electric fences in residential neighborhoods. And the list goes on!” “And, while interfering in major family questions, like a woman’s right to determine her own health care, your legislators in Tallahassee have failed to address critical issues like the sky-high cost of insurance and the pitiful lack of affordable housing for young and working people. The sad result of this negligence is that our high school and college graduates, and the employees we count on to run our restaurants and maintain our homes, can’t afford to live here. So they leave.” District 75 is a big one, from Center Road in Venice all the way through Englewood and Rotonda, from Port Charlotte all the way through portions of North Port and Wellen Park. These are all fast-growing areas, facing similar problems of high property insurance, over-development of natural areas, and lack of affordable housing for our youth and working people. “It’s time to start working on the real issues,” Dunbar says, “and stop spinning our wheels on the same-old politics and splitting people apart on the cultural topic-of-the-day.” Dunbar practiced commercial and banking law in Louisiana and Texas before “retiring” to Englewood. While living in New Orleans, he volunteered to help protect abused and neglected children through his service on the board of CASA, a Guardian ad Litem program. In addition, he chaired a Bar Association panel charged with hearing ethical complaints against attorneys. An ardent environmentalist, Tony is a certified Florida Master Naturalist. He joined the board of the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center, and he volunteers weekly at both the Cedar Point Environmental Center and the Lemon Bay Environmental Park. He is a loyal Rays fan and an often disappointed follower of Tulane football. On the lighter side, he is an award-winning author of crime and historical mystery novels. Tony and life-time partner, Nancy Shoemaker, live in Englewood. Their family includes three children: Sam, John Henry and Annalisa, and two grandchildren.
