The foundation of our democracy is built on the rule of law, equality, and the protection of individual rights. Donald Trump’s actions and rhetoric pose significant threats to these core principles.

Threats to the Rule of Law

Trump’s disregard for the rule of law is alarming. His repeated attacks on the judiciary, such as calling judges “biased” and courts “rigged,” have led to an unprecedented wave of threats against judges, undermining judicial independence (Reuters)​ (Reuters)​. This erosion of trust in our democratic institutions is dangerous and sets a troubling precedent for future administrations.

The Risk to Individual Rights

Just as abortion rights were stripped away from women with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, other rights like marriage equality are at risk under Trump’s influence. His administration’s policies and judicial appointments have consistently targeted the LGBTQ2+ community, threatening to roll back decades of progress. This concern is not unfounded—51% of Americans view Trump as a serious threat to democracy (Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service)​ (Institute of Politics and Public Service)​.

A Better Way Forward

We must engage in conversations about how to protect our democracy and individual rights. Local politics play a crucial role in shaping our future. By supporting candidates who uphold democratic values and the rule of law, we can ensure a more just and equitable society. Recent polls show that 81% of voters believe democracy is currently threatened, indicating a widespread need for vigilant protection of our democratic processes (Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service)​ (Institute of Politics and Public Service)​.
