[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-05-30 So, now that he’s been convicted, here’s what’s happening: He will have to go to the probation office on the 10th floor of the courthouse building for a presentencing interview. The report will go to Judge Merchan and can affect the sentence, so T***p can't blow it off. Here’s how it works: He will be asked about his personal history, his mental health, and the circumstances that led to his conviction. It is is annoying and humiliating, even for those who have no shame. Yes, it’s really bad. That’s when, as a defense lawyer friend of mine told me: “The reality of your situation really sets in. You can see it wash over their face. In waves. All five stages of grief — in a blender, all mixed up — spewing out for over one half an hour. It’s hard to watch. Even those guys you know are guilty as sin, you can’t help but feel for them.” I think sentencing will be in July. [Update: July 11, four days before the Republican Convention. Waaaa waaa.] Which is good for Team America, by keeping his criminality on the radar during mid summer. First time [technically!] offenders, like Trump, often get a fine rather than prison time. That said, New York Mayor Eric Adams said Rikers Island can handle it if the judge sentences T***p to prison. Alternatively, he could get a house arrest arrangement. Any fine-only sentence will probably have probation attached to it, which could limit T***p in various ways. As you all probably know, a conviction would not disqualify T***p from running for or [cough. cough] serving as president He, as a felon, technically couldn’t vote in Florida until he does his time and pays restoration, etc.. But, c’mon, DeSantis still has delusions that he can win in 2028, so he will most likely either change the law, or “pardon” Trump arguing some stupid legal reason, or do something performative that allows T***p to vote. Anyways, Florida also honors the voting laws in the state where the felony conviction occurred, which in this case is New York, where, convicted felons are not allowed to vote only when they are imprisoned. So, if not prison time and he pays up, he can vote. Will he pay up and how will that look to his Cult? Regardless, T***p has seven months to file an appeal, which his lawyers — if he still pays them from the loot he plunders from his marks — will in almost all likelihood file it on the last day. That way, the the appeals court could take weeks or months to make a decision and that decision could be appealed to the New York Court of Appeals. A final verdict could be years away. But the Court of Public Opinion is another matter entirely. I see two openings here: — A quarter of the Republicans voted for Nikki Haley in the primaries long after she dropped out. Victory margins in key states like PN and MI, etc, are razor thin. It only takes a half a percentage point of the vote to swing the election, and if only 10% of Haley primary voters jump ship… — This next one is more speculative and concerns shaving away some, not many, but some, of the true believers: MAGA respects power. Power to compel others to their will. The power to force others to your will. Well, few things are as powerful as a felony conviction. This guilty verdict is the Deep State and we Woke Libtards forcing their Hero to our will. It it is proof positive in their power-obsessed minds that T***p is weak. That we — the Socialist, Communist , Far Leftist, Fascist, Godless and F** Loving Woke Mob beat their boy. And beat him good. And they know it.
