The ancient Chinese poet and military philosopher Sun Tzu advised not to attack your opponent, attack your opponent’s strategy. In order to do this of course, it is necessary to know who your opponent is and to identify their strategy.

Donald Trump rose to power in considerable part because of the strength of the Christian Right. One of the central movements of the Christian Right is a poorly understood movement called the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR), and its mostly led by people who go uncovered by the news media and ignored by center/left interest groups and the Democratic Party. However, they comprise most of the key religious leaders around Donald Trump and are an important part of his campaign strategy this year.

But its important to know that NAR is a revolutionary theocratic movement, that is taking center stage this election year, hiding in plain sight. It is the cutting edge of the Christian Right . Whatever the electoral fate of Donald Trump, this is a movement that will probably be around for the lifetimes of everyone reading these words.

When The New York Times published their blockbuster story about Justice Samuel Alito flying the Appeal to Heaven flag over his summer home at the Jersey Shore, the paper noted that the flag is associated with an NAR leader named Dutch Sheets. There was no mention that “Mr. Sheets” is one of hundreds of Apostles in the U.S. alone, and that NAR is part of techtonic changes going on in American and global Christianity.

Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians comrises the second largest sector of global and American Christianity, after Roman Catholicism. It’s also the only major growth sector. While the NAR comes out of these traditions, it does not comprise the whole of the global movement. Rather, it’s a significant organizing force that has also become the cutting edge of the Christian Right in the US and elsewhere.

Sheets and other NAR leaders were deeply involved in January 6th, where there were many Appeal to Heaven flags on display. NAR sees itself as engaged in a war, in which the Appeal to Heaven flag is their battle flag.
