Street Prophets Friday: Another Week, Another Diary [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-05-31 Well, here we are at the stubby tail-end of May with another week's worth of little snapshots to share. If you're a bit hungover from celebrating this will be a quiet spot to gaze at a few photos, listen to some gentle music and unwind. I'll also put out some pitchers of water. Gotta get re-hydrated after metabolizing all that alcohol y'know. Yes, it's just another open thread, just as fuzzy and fluffy as my tongue this morning. Actually, truth be told, I had two beers last weekend. When we did go over to a friend's place for the evening, I was the designated driver— and the Czech Republic has a zero tolerance policy. Some of the lovely irises in our friend's garden— and her outhouse complete with a helpful street sign indicating the single direction of traffic inside. It was a nice evening spent with friends. We enjoyed the evening outdoors as long as we could and then moved indoors where some semi-final hockey game was a bit of a distraction off in one corner of the room. Back at my own garden, there was a lot to get done before we went back to the big city. Two of my Butternut Squash had finally sprouted and I cut some expensive copper roof edging up to make protective collars for the plants. Yeah, I found some probably terribly expensive copper sheets used in roofing in the back of the barn and sacrificed two of them for the good of the garden and the detriment of hungry slugs. I went a little crazy with the collar for the central pumpkin plant. At least one of these plants should hopefully survive! I decided to be a cruel and horrible gardener and brutally clip leaves off of the tomatoes. Now they look a bit more like palm trees. I tied them up to their posts, all three of them. I also have a few cherry tomato plants, but I'm going to mostly leave those alone. I think the slugs had done some damage to them, but they seemed to be getting ready to bloom. I left some beer out for the slugs. Back in the big city there was the usual running around to English lessons, but half of my students were off on a school trip to Albania. Wow, and my year for the school trip to Washington DC was the one year in a decade and for at least a decade to come that we didn't go. I don't remember why it was cancelled. I do remember my brother telling me about his trip, bumping into Hubert Humphrey in the halls of Congress and smoking pot with his history teacher in the bus on the way home. A Hare spotted in the park I walk through to get to my lessons on Monday On Tuesday the rain let up just in time for me and a trio of lovely ladies to attend a concert at a little outdoor venue at Vyšehrad— Prague’s other castle (of which there are a few.) A view to the west, from the steps leading up to the castle from the banks of the Vltava river. The first artist to perform was Jana Rychterová. She was new to me, but I enjoyed her songs quite alot. Here's a humorous song she wrote (and performed on Tuesday) about the fortitude to be found in a bottle of wine— during the COVID lockdown: Then Ivan Hlas came out and played his set. I used to work in a recreation center where I taught ceramics in the basement while Ivan Hlas had some sort of music course upstairs. The place was big enough that I only bumped into him once. Getting to be quite an old croaker, recently celebrated his 70th birthday. Here's one of the songs he played on Tuesday: Then there was the headliner, The Spiritual Quartet. They're the continuation of a group called The Spirituál Kvintet that played for over 60 years. Spirituál Kvartet performing with founding member of Spirituál Kvintet (1960), Jiří Tichota and his wife Zdenka (who joined in 1974) They're often described as a sort of Czech version of The Weavers. They’re the opening group in this over two hour concert video: Haven't had a chance to watch the whole video myself yet … seems safe. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Vyšehrad The path down from the castle”-- with Prague’s most famous castle seen lit up (a tiny speck really) in the background. Thanks for stopping by. This is an open thread.
