Given the background noise, I couldn’t determine whether or not Mom was at home when she answered the call yesterday. Her cell phone and her TV remote always seems to be miles apart in her place and finding the remote once she answers the phone is usually a struggle that takes a minute to two. It only took about 30 seconds for Mom to tell me that she was at the casino in downtown Detroit. When Mom is out and about, I am under pretty strict orders not to disturb her. Usually, I say something like, “OK, I’ll call you when you get home,” or something like that and I am off the phone within seconds. But this was important. “Mom, I have to tell you something.” “What?” “There’s a verdict.” “Waitaminute, I can’t hear a thing you’re saying” Usually, I talk to Mom on speaker phone. But I was outside and under the METRA tracks and you could still hear train noise as it pulled away from the station going north toward Wisconsin. After I could no longer hear the train, I said, “Mom, there’s a verdict.” “What do you mean?” “There’s a verdict in the Trump trial. Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts.” “Say that again.” “Mom, you heard me the first time. Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts.” “Are you serious?” Yep. She let out a scream that everyone somewhat near her in the casino must have heard. I considered that the casino would put her out for being a crazy woman. After she calmed down, she asked, “So is the motherfucker going to jail?” “Probably not but maybe.” “...so that’s all I wanted to say, I call you later.” “OK, bye.” I received a follow-up call this morning. “Kevin, now I know that you are going to have a very happy birthday. Shit, I’ll throw a party for you and all of us.” “Mom, I’ll be in Baltimore then, so if I celebrate with anyone, it’ll be with Mattie before I get on the Amtrak from D.C.” I remember talking with Mom in the early morning hours of November 9, 2016. Mom was obviously sad, a little depressed, and I didn’t speak to her for three days. I had to call my brother to go over to the house and talk to her. I’m glad that I was able to deliver her some good news on this topic. The shoe salesman will be sentenced on July 11 at 10 a.m. ET. Four hours and 34 minutes prior to that, I will celebrate 57 years on this planet. Comments below the fold. TOP COMMENTS Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. From inkstainedwretch: In PvtJarHead's excellent diary about Republicans circling the wagons around Convict Trump, read jfromga's last sentence and see that we don't need Ron White Boots' "anti-woke"; we need moar, moar, moar Woke to the threat. Highlighted by belinda ridgewood: This comment by tampaedski in DRo’s recommended diary about Speaker Mike Johnson wanting SCOTUS to intervene in Trump’s criminal conviction.
